Motorcycle Parade Spreads Christmas Joy

By Dasha Morgan- On Saturday, November 21 the annual Henderson County Toy Run once again shows how the Henderson County community opens its hearts to children in need. This charitable event helps provide toys and cash donations for abused and neglected children. More than 150 Henderson county children within the DSS Foster Care System receive gifts. A Toy Run Committee chaired by Kimberly Carland has been planning for months and working hard to prepare for this festive fundraiser. They want to make this year’s Christmas a truly joyous time for all.

Registration for this exciting event begins at 10:00 a.m. at Fletcher Community Park on 85 Howard Gap Road. Anyone interested in participating needs to bring an unwrapped toy or a donation with a $15 value. Every participant will receive a barbecue sandwich lunch (all provided by Ugly Pig BBQ), be entertained with music provided by Billy Lowe Sound, and have a chance to win a door prize before the cyclists hit the road. Just come and enjoy the spirit of giving.

Motorcyclists come from all over the area to join in the 24-mile parade that runs from Fletcher Community Park to Fanning Bridge, down Highway 280, onto Brickyard Road, out to Highway 64, onto Main Street, to Third Avenue and then ends at the courthouse.

“The parade of motorcycles streaming into the courthouse steps filled with toys brings tears to your eyes,” says Chairwoman Kimberly Carland. Huge teddy bears and gifts hanging onto the backs of the cyclists are a sight for sore eyes. Santa is there to help too. The streets are lined with people cheering them on.

As written on the TOY-RUN Facebook page “For the last 12 years or so the youth of our Fellowship (the Unitarian Universalist Church of Hendersonville on Kanuga Road) have helped with the Henderson Country Toy Run. What a sight to see: 500 motorcycles bearing gifts as they arrive at the new courthouse. The riders place their toys on the courthouse steps, then our youth bag them up, load them into a truck, and help unload them at the DSS building. We help the children in Henderson County’s foster care program have a much merrier Christmas. Join us!” In addition assistance for this event has been provided by the Christian Motorcycle Association, Hendersonville Chapter, local Motorcycle Associations, and many other organizations.

An After Ride Party will be held at the Southern Appalachian Brewery, A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Toy Run.
