In response to years of record growth, the Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority (GARAA), the airport’s governing board, is moving forward with a plan to modernize and expand the airport terminal – the largest expansion since the airport was built and opened in 1961. A project of this magnitude will take many years to complete, with the first year dedicated to strategic and thoughtful design.

The design of the airport expansion is underway, and the airport is seeking community input. An on-line survey is now open, and residents of western North Carolina are invited to participate. Community feedback will help inform the aesthetic design and amenities offered.

“The tasks before us are significant,” said Lew Bleiweis, A.A.E., executive director. “It is important to the board and airport team to gather meaningful input from our community. This is a significant time in the history of Asheville Regional Airport, and the decisions we make will be long-lasting. The transformed airport should reflect and complement our amazing region, and continue to shine as a cornerstone organization of which our residents are proud.”

A link to the survey and more information about the design process is available at flyavl.com/AVLforward. The airport will accept input for several months, and results and next steps will be published soon thereafter.

“AVL is an important part of our region and economy, and I encourage residents to participate in the survey,” said Bleiweis. “I look forward to the process, and moving forward with a well-planned design.”
